We do not know — and we will say so

'Rigget' does not occur in any scientific paper, taxonomic database or reputable international trade source we could reach. It shows up only as a cross-sell link on a handful of Vietnamese retail pages, usually next to 'Triangel'. No described Tylomelania has a name resembling it. There are guesses — a corruption of 'ridged' (describing the ribbed shell sculpture), a corruption of 'nugget', or a phonetic rendering of an Indonesian exporter's local name — but they are guesses, and we do not print guesses on a label.

The Sulawesi lakes are hot and alkaline but genuinely SOFT — Matano measures 28.7°C, pH 8.5, GH 7, KH 5 and around 87 ppm TDS. So do not chase a very high GH: a stable alkaline pH and enough KH to buffer it are what matter. Stability still beats perfect numbers.

SHELL

KH is what keeps the shell intact. An eroded apex is completely normal on a wild-caught adult — the warning sign is fresh erosion or pitting at the NEW growth near the aperture, which means KH and minerals in the tank are dropping.

Wild species — natural profile

It is still a wild-caught Sulawesi snail — that part is certain. What is not certain is which species and from where, and those are precisely the fields we leave blank.

Origin: Known only to genus level: Tylomelania is endemic to the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. No source lets us narrow this form down to a particular lake or river.

Natural habitat: The genus lives in the two ancient lake systems, Malili and Poso, and in rivers and streams across most of Sulawesi below about 700 m. This form could come from any of them.

Behaviour & diet: As for the genus: it rasps biofilm, periphyton and detritus from hard surfaces or works through soft sediment. A slow crawler and a slow feeder that needs sinking food.

Conservation: Rabbit snail stock is essentially always wild-caught and many species in the genus are threatened. Not knowing the species means not knowing its status — one more reason to keep it long.

Keeping note: Since we cannot say whether it grazes rock or ploughs sediment, offer both and watch: if it buries, add fine sand; if it clings to rock and wood, add biofilm-covered surfaces.

Different Tylomelania species DO hybridise in aquaria. If you want to keep a line pure for breeding, keep one species per tank. Mixed-species tanks are for display only.

COMMON MISTAKE

Rabbit snails are NOT an algae crew. They graze biofilm and detritus, they will not clear a nuisance-algae problem, and they must be fed. Keeping them 'to clean the tank' is the single most common reason they quietly starve over a few months.

FEEDING

Omnivorous, mostly biofilm, detritus and blanched vegetables. Add White Powder + Yellow Powder 2–3 times a week, plus blanched pumpkin or cucumber for growth. A Sula Sand substrate holds the alkaline pH long-term and gives the soft-sediment species somewhere to plough for detritus.
